Annual Scholarship Winner
Welcome Frye
The Walpole Historical Society
sponsors an annual scholarhip funded by Florentine Films to aid a graduating
high school senior (who is a Walpole resident) in pursuing further studies
in History and/or Documentary Filmmaking. This year the board awarded
the $500 scholarship to Welcome Frye from Fall Mountain Regional High
School. He plans to major in history and political science at Union
College (Schenectady, NY). Prior to his freshman year, Welcome will be
spending a gap year abroad in Ecuador under the guidance of a program called
Global Citizen Year. He explained how studying history will support
his future political aspirations:
The study of
history is one of the most efficient ways of learning the tendencies of
people, society, and nations... Every election in US history has a
wealth of information that can help us decipher what our predecessors
experienced and how they chose to respond to the issues facing them.
When interrelated events are studied and understood in their context, better
decisions can be made in the present.... One of Socrates' more famous
quotes is, "We must know thyself to be wise," and the study of history is
exactly how I intend to achieve that wisdom.
We wish continued success to Welcome
in his future studies.
